I smiled as my beautiful 14 year old daughter hugged Louis goodbye. He was going on a weeklong business trip today. She had Louis’s eyes and my hair. She looked more like her father than me. “No please daddy don’t go!” Sophie said. “Why not?” Louis laughed. “I don’t know! I just don’t want you to!” She said back with a smile. Louis laughed and kissed her forehead. “I want to stay to but unfortunately I have to. I love you though! Be good for your mom!” He said while giving her a hug. “I will daddy! I love you to!” She stopped hugging him and Louis came over and gave me a peck on the lips and said, “I love you Cher!” He said to me. “I love you to! Be safe! Have a nice flight!” I said back to him. He smiled then walked out the door. He traveled for work every once in a while. He was a music professor. I watched as his car pulled out of the drive way and headed towards downtown New York.

The sound of my alarm woke me up. I ground and rolled over and turned it off. I got up out of bed and went to make sure Sophie was up and awake for school. I walked into the living room and she was already ready. I looked at the time. 7:15. Wait what? I rubbed my eyes and looked at it again. I had overslept 30 minutes. “Thanks for letting me sleep in!” I said to Sophie. We were more like best friends. “You’re welcome mom!” She said with a smile. A car horn honked outside and Sophie waved bye and headed out. She was probably riding to school with her friends who were sophomores in high school. She was a freshman. I grabbed a bowl of cereal and sat down to watch a show called Psych. I had 4 hours before Louis came home.
I had been watching for about 2 hours before it switched to the news. The news reporter said, “North tower of the world trade center hit by plane” I sat up straight and stared at the screen. What if that was Louis’s plane? Don’t be stupid. Of course it wasn’t. He’s safe.
**Sophie’s P.O.V**
The whole class sat around the television screen and watched the north tower go up in flames. Some crying and some staring in shock. I was staring at the screen in horror. I knew it wasn’t my dad’s plane. His was flight 175. How many people were in that building? I gasped at the thought of that. The news reporter started talking again. This time it changed my life.
“Flight 175 in direct path to south tower.” I screamed, “THAT’S MY DADS FLIGHT!” Everyone turned to look at me with sorrow. My phone rang from my backpack. It was my dad’s ringtone. I ran over to it and picked up, knowing that this was probably one of the last times I would hear his voice. “Daddy!” I chocked out. “Listen Soph, I love you. Always remember that. No matter how many fights we got in I will always love you. I’m so very proud of you. You’re my little girl.” He said quickly. “I love you to daddy!” I said. “Be good for your mother, I love you baby.” He said sadly. “I will daddy. I promise. I love you so much dad! Jesus is going to take care of you.” I said trying to keep strong for dad. We both knew what was going to happen. “I love you to baby girl!” And the line went dead. I turned my head towards the screen in time to see the 2nd plane hit the South tower of the world trade center. I started crying louder and harder than I ever had before. I kept saying, “Daddy” or, “Dad” and “I love you dad!” The teacher had to turn off the TV, but not before I saw the south tower collapse.
**Cher’s P.O.V**
I watched the smoke billow up from the north tower. My phone rang. It was Lou. “Hey babe are you on your way?” I said with a smile. “Cher I don’t’ think I’m coming home. Our plane has been hijacked. We’re heading straight towards the world trade center. I overheard the hijackers.” I swallowed back a sob, wanting to stay strong for him. “I love you Louis.” I said to him. “I love you to Cher. I always will. No matter how many times we fought.” He said to me. “I’ll miss you.” I said holding back a sob. “I’ll miss you to. I’ve got to call Sophie and tell her goodbye. I love you Cher, I’ll always be with you and watching over you.” He said starting to cry. “I love you to Louis!” And he hung up. It wasn’t 5 minutes later that I watched his plane crash into the south tower. I watched it collapse to the ground and I knew he was gone. I let the sobs take over my body.
We had a memorial for him 3 days later. It was one of the hardest things I had to do. My Louis. Gone. Forever. Taken from me by the tragedy of September 11, 2001
